NLHC opens new playground
Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC), will hold an
official
opening ceremony Saturday, October 8, 1999, at Crosbie/Portia Place, in
St. John's to mark the completion of a new
playground. The announcement was made today by Lloyd Matthews,
MHA for St. John's North, and minister responsible for NLHC.
"This playground will provide a healthy and safe environment
for the
enjoyment of the many families who wish to take advantage of these
facilities,"
Mr. Matthews said. "Although this structure received funding from the
federal
and provincial governments, it was the determination and hard work of
the
people of the Crosbie/Portia Tenant Association that made this project
a success, " Mr. Matthews added.
Located on a 15 x 25 metre lot, the CSA approved playground
will serve
more than 80 families in the area. Keith Breen, President of the
local Tenant Association commented: "We are thrilled to have our own
playground,
it will be a tremendous benefit to the many families in the area who
have
young children."
The multi-component play structure was constructed at a cost
of approximately
$35,000. Funding was provided on a 75/25 per cent cost-shared
basis
by NLHC and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
Intended
for children ages 5 through 10, the playground will be open daily from
9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and adult supervision is required. The
playground
is part of the corporation's commitment to the continued
development
of active and vital neighbourhoods..
