Roof Renovations Underway on Chalker Place Newfoundland Labrador Housing (Housing) has awarded a $342,600 contract to Newfound Roofing Ltd. of St. John’s to replace the roofing on 42 units in the Chalker Place social housing development in St. John’s. "Our government is pleased to make another significant investment in one of the province’s longest standing Housing developments," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Housing. "These renovations build upon the work completed last year to replace siding, windows and doors on Chalker Place." The work has been ongoing for several weeks and in addition to re-roofing, involves the complete replacement of eaves on all units. "I applaud Housing’s efforts," said Ed Buckingham, St. John’s East MHA. "This worthwhile project will ensure that the residents of Chalker Place will have good, solid homes for years to come." These current upgrades and repairs are part of Housing’s annual Modernization and Improvement Program, to which the Provincial Government infused an additional $14.5 million in Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation for building, renovating and retro-fitting social housing infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The anticipated completion date for this project is December 2009. The Provincial Government recently released A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador – Secure Foundations; its long-term vision for social housing designed to improve the housing circumstances of lower-income households and help create healthier communities. - 30 - Media contacts:
