Exploits Community Centre Celebrates its Official Grand Opening A new multi-purpose community centre is now officially open in Grand Falls-Windsor. The Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister Responsible for Housing and Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, attended the grand opening ceremony for the Exploits Community Centre this morning. Newfoundland Labrador Housing CEO and Chairman Len Simms, as well as community centre staff, volunteers and local residents were also on hand to celebrate. "I've had the opportunity to visit many community centres across the province so I can speak first hand on the positive impact they have on the lives of individuals and families in the neighbourhood," said Minister Skinner. "I’m delighted that the Exploits Community Centre will now fulfil this role for our neighbourhood residents here in Grand Falls –Windsor and Bishop’s Falls." This facility will offer a wide range of programs and services to residents of Newfoundland Labrador Housing (Housing) neighbourhoods in Grand Falls-Windsor and Bishop’s Falls. Programs and services include Homework Haven, Community Kitchens, Healthy Snack Club and special events. The centre is housed in four renovated units provided by Housing who will also provide $100,000 in operating funding to the centre each year. Also in attendance for today’s event was Susan Sullivan, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-
Buchans, who commented, “I’m delighted to be here for this grand
opening. I’m sure that the Exploits Community Centre will meet the
needs of those it will serve very well, from young children to seniors. It will be a very positive addition
to the community.”
The community centre will also be home to the
Exploits Valley Community Coalition Family Resource Centre, who will
partner with the new community centre in providing a number of programs
and services. "The Exploits Community Centre will provide an
opportunity for area residents to participate in social, recreational
and educational services. We are very happy to have everyone here today
to mark this very special occasion," said Heather Fudge, Executive
Director, Exploits Community Centre. Including the Exploits Community Centre,
Housing provides operating funding for eight community centres across
the province for salaries and program expenses. Several of these
centres are located in renovated Housing units. Work on the new centre
was provided by Housing staff and Housing also provided $268,000 for
materials for the Exploits Community Centre. - 30 - Media contacts:
